Olaide's story: A single mother's fight for stability

Sheffield, England

We spoke with Olaide, a single mother of four facing financial difficulties. To provide for her family, she works in healthcare, often putting in long hours to make ends meet. Her visa status means she cannot access public funds or benefits, so her family must manage on her income alone.

“It’s just me with the kids, trying to navigate each day as it goes by. It’s been quite difficult, truth be told.”

After rent, council tax, gas, and electricity bills are paid, Olaide has very little left to spend on anything else for her family. She prioritises her children’s needs above her own, even when it means going without herself.

“Even if I don’t eat, I ensure the children have everything. They’re my priority.”

A referral to support that feels safe and simple

Olaide first heard about Lightning Reach through a text from CDER, a Lightning Reach partner connecting people with financial support. Initially, she felt cautious about seeking help because of her visa status and the stigma around asking for support.

“Many people need help but are afraid to ask, sometimes because of visa worries or fear about being judged or mocked.”

Once Olaide decided to give Lightning Reach a try, she found the portal straightforward and secure. Signing up and building her profile was simple, and she especially appreciated the confidentiality of the process.

“I liked that the portal is very easy to navigate & confidential. It was really good.”

Olaide was matched with a range of support schemes through Lightning Reach. She applied to the National Energy Foundation and YES Energy for help with energy bills, and also explored support for council tax from Sheffield Council and assistance from her water provider through Lightning Reach.

Energy vouchers that made a difference

Olaide was awarded £100 in energy vouchers from the National Energy Foundation, providing immediate help by allowing her to top-up her prepayment meter. She has also applied to further support, and is awaiting the outcome.

Receiving the energy vouchers meant Olaide could stop worrying about the basics.

“Knowing I could top up the electricity and cook for my children meant I did not have to worry as much, and I could use my energy for other things.”

Breaking down barriers: support available to all

Olaide’s experience with Lightning Reach showed her that support is available, even for people who might think they’re not eligible. She describes the process as respectful, and free from judgement.

“It’s like having a place you can go where no one judges you, they just help you find support.”

Olaide hopes her story will encourage others to reach out when things become difficult. She is grateful for the help she received and wants others in similar situations to know that support is available.

“I just hope my story inspires someone to take that first step. Thank you for making life easier for people in need.”
