Sunderland, UK
Kayleigh was signposted to the Lightning Reach portal by Sunderland City Council and received £140 in energy vouchers from the National Energy Foundation
“You don’t realise how much support is out there. When you get help from one organisation, they can put you in touch with another who can help with something else.”
Kayleigh was receiving Universal Credit, but with everyday costs increasing, money was tight. On top of this, unexpected expenses began to pile up. She needed to replace essential household items, which left her finances stretched.
“It was just a bit of a struggle because we had to buy a new washing machine and some bedroom carpets. We were really low so I reached out for help”
She had previously received the Warm Home Discount, but after switching energy suppliers, she was told she was no longer eligible - adding further pressure as energy costs continued to rise.
Finding gas and electricity bill help through Lightning Reach
Kayleigh discovered Lightning Reach through a Facebook post shared by her local council, Sunderland City Council. Through the portal, she was matched with support from the National Energy Foundation, who provided three energy vouchers totalling £140. This support helped reduce the immediate financial strain of energy costs.
“It helped a lot! Because we saved on the gas and electricity, it meant we could get a bit more shopping in. It was a weight off our shoulders as we’d been so worried”
With energy bills eased, Kayleigh was able to redirect some of her limited budget towards other essentials.
Sharing support with others
Kayleigh emphasised how “ashamed” people can feel when asking for help, but said that her experience taught her that support is there for a reason - and that if you’re entitled to it, you should make use of it.
She recommended that others who are struggling financially should give Lightning Reach a try:
“You don't realise how much support is out there until you actually look, and when you get help from one organisation, they can put you in touch with another who can help with something else”
