Brian was referred to the Lightning Reach portal by the Royal British Legion and received:

  • £2,700 in grants from the Royal British Legion

  • £150 worth of food vouchers from Dorset Council

  • An electric blanket from Octopus Energy

“I saw that my energy bills were rocketing up. The support I’ve received has helped me carry on. I’m no longer anxious about what I put in the shopping basket.”

We spoke with Brian, a pensioner who lives with challenging injuries and health conditions after 42 years of military service. When Brian reached retirement age, he expected things to ease a little with a full pension and a winter fuel payment. However, changes to his state pension meant his income was lower than he had planned for. When these payments didn’t come through, Brian was left with a wide gap in his income. His biggest worry was managing through winter with the rising cost of living and energy prices.

“I had to try and use as little heating as possible when it was pretty cold, even shutting some of the house zones down.”

From struggling on a pension to stability through cost-of-living support

Seeking support with his pension and financial situation, Brian was signposted to the Lightning Reach portal through the Royal British Legion. Brian found and applied for relevant help rapidly. It meant he didn’t have to keep contacting different organisations or repeat his story multiple times.

Brian received support from multiple organisations, including a £2,700 financial grant from the Royal British Legion and £150 in food vouchers from Dorset Council. He also received an electric blanket from Octopus Energy to help keep him warm and support in reducing his outstanding energy bills.

“Lightning Reach has got a good range of support organisations in there, and it gives you the basic information. It’s accurate and clear, so you can make an informed decision before you click through to that support.”

A lasting impact

The support Brian received has given him and his family some much-needed breathing space. Today, Brian is feeling more hopeful, especially with the extra assurance of Octopus Energy looking into reducing his utility bills. Brian says he can get back to “the simple joys of life”.

“I can have some joy and fun and not worry about cutting back on things such as filling the car up or paying bills.”

I think Brian’s experience really shows how valuable a streamlined support system can be, especially for people navigating complex financial situations. I appreciate how the Lightning Reach portal reduces the stress of repeating personal circumstances and makes accessing help more efficient. To me, it feels a bit like playing Veck IO, where having the right tools and clear direction can make all the difference in progressing smoothly.

Been trying out Nano Banana for AI image generation lately. You just describe what you want in plain text and it generates something — built on Gemini so the quality is decent. Handles a range of styles from realistic to anime. Useful for quick concept visuals without needing to set up anything locally.
