Jimmy had always worked hard, but after developing COPD and experiencing worsening health, he was no longer able to work. The loss of income led to significant financial hardship and, eventually, homelessness. When he was later able to move into a new council property, he had used up all of his savings getting settled and had little money left for essentials. As winter approached, he was worried about how he would afford warm clothing while still paying for everyday bills.
The City of Edinburgh Council signposted Jimmy to Lightning Reach, where he was matched with support from Poppy Scotland. Through the platform, he received a £150 grant to help pay for winter clothing. Jimmy found the online process straightforward and appreciated being able to apply without having to make difficult phone calls during an already challenging time.
The grant allowed Jimmy to buy the warm clothing he needed while keeping money aside for essentials such as heating and electricity. "It relieved so much stress." Having one less thing to worry about gave him valuable breathing space and made the winter months feel more manageable. Jimmy is now more aware of the support available and hopes others in similar situations can access help when they need it.
"It's hard to make the phone call, but it's easy to do it online."
