Lambeth, London
Finding stability during unemployment
“It’s like having a place you can go where no one judges you, they just help you find support. Just thank you for the support and assistance.”

We recently spoke with Jason, a teacher who has been out of work for the past year due to health issues. As a result, he has found himself struggling financially to keep up with essential living costs.

“It’s been a very difficult year because I’ve been out of employment. The cost of energy, food, and day to day expenses has made it very, very difficult.”

Jason shared that he would like to relocate to London, return to teaching, and finish his degree. However, due to his current financial situation, making the move has felt especially challenging.

Support and signposting that made a difference

Jason first discovered the Lightning Reach portal during a visit to Lambeth in London, where he contacted the local council’s housing advice team for guidance on his options for moving to the area. During their conversation, they recognised he needed extra help and referred him to the portal for additional support.

After signing up and completing his profile, he was pleased with the amount of support available:

“I thought it was actually amazing in terms of services and support that was offered there. You could look through the list and find something for any type of issue.”

Through the Lightning Reach portal, Jason applied to the Teaching Staff Trust and was awarded a grant of £750 to help with essentials, including rent, utility bills, groceries, and costs linked to relocating.

Moving forward with wraparound support

This support meant Jason was able to look ahead and make progress towards his goals, rather than being weighed down by money worries. It arrived at a crucial moment, easing immediate financial pressure and helping him look ahead with confidence.

“They gave me a grant of money to help with my living costs and my bills. It was exactly what I needed during this difficult time. It’s helped me to afford my bills while I am looking for work.”
Finding financial support made a real difference for Jason, and it was Lambeth Council’s guidance and referral to Lightning Reach that brought together both practical advice and financial help.
